Bursitis in hip
Permalink

I have a new client who has bursitis in her left hip. She says she has seen a physio and had 2 steroid injections but nothing has helped. The physio has advised strengthening her hip/glute and avoiding one leg loading. She is a studio instructor, so pretty active - teaches aerobics and step mainly, bit of spirals and yoga. I am due to see her for the first time this week, so have no results of screening yet, but I wanted to ask in advance... Would I begin the normalise phase with the pelvis as I normally would, or do I avoid this area completely?

Hi Paula

In simple terms, yes you would, however you must follow the process of her completing the client assessment form prior to getting hands on.

Obviously anything that increases discomfort should be avoided so move slowly through assessments like downings sign during which you control the movement. Demonstrate everything before you do it so she can see what you will be doing and then question her throughout about how she is feeling.

Chances are she will be ok if she is walking around and certainly if she is still teaching classes.

With clients like this less is more in the beginning and the sooner you can re-assess the better, within a few days anyway - not the next day necessarily.

Come back if you need to and let us know how it goes - :)
