case studies & final exam on Module 3 Biomechanics
Permalink

I am a bit confused with what I am supposed to do in terms of case studies (how many in total, do they have to be with people with low back pain & do we need to log them onto the survery monkey). I keep getting conflicting information.

I am due to do Module 3 in march. I believe (unless you specify differently) that on the last day of the module we should do our exam which is a presentation of one of our case studies. is this correct? I was under the impression that on exam day we are suppose to bring a person with us, screen that person and then be tested on the results on the day!

thanks, Bruna

HI Bruna

Firstly apologies that you may have had conflicting information, this is likely to be because we are constantly striving to improve the learning experience of our learners and so we may adapt things slightly to respond to feedback while maintaining standards required by the industry and ITS as an organisation. BC's are some of the most sought after and successful professionals in the world due to the standards ITS have set.
In the cross over from 2011-2012 we changed the structure of our diploma which may have also added to the confusion so we are keen to standardise the assessment process however we are also sympathetic to those involved in this cross over.

The standard assessment process moving forwards is this (with leniency case by case):

  • We require you to provide evidence of 4 case studies who have been screened a minimum of 4 times.
  • The evidence we need to collect is the paper work made up into your CAR to include the case study grids x 4 and a 2000 written report.
  • For those attending module 3 you will need a minimum of 2 of your case studies to be low grade non specific back pain sufferers. If none of your original 4 fit this requirement then you will need to find 2 new case studies with LBP to be able to demonstrate your rationale in working with them as a BC
  • While the final day of module 3 is your practical assessment and 10 minute case study presentation, you are not required to hand in your written report until 4 weeks post module 3. This enables you to consider the information you will take away from the low back module 3.
  • ALL results from ALL case studies MUST be uploaded onto surveymonkey. This information is vital in giving you, the BC's, yet more solid evidence of what you can achieve with these skills. Any data collated will be shared with you all once analysed.
  • You do not need to bring a person with you however if you would like to please advise your tutor.

Bruna or anyone else reading this if you have any further questions please do let me know as I am sure this wil be helpful to other learners, so thank you for bringing it up in here!

biggrin

Hi Rachel

ok, thanks for your reply.

so I am supposed to present 2 case studies in 10 mins. is that correct?

What do you mean by practical assessment. I understand the 10 minute case study presentation, but what are we supposed to do during the practical assessment

Also, I am struggling a bit with finding case studies. I did initally find some people from my Pilates classes but then some dropped out and some other didn't really show much change from my screening? cry

Sometimes I wish I had a mentor I could go and see, also to show the screenings I am doing and they way I am working, only of course during the course and to build up confidence on what I am doing....

HI Bruna

You only have to present on one case study that you found to be interesting for some reason. For 10 minutes.

The practical assessment is the one hour full screen that you did as a mock at the end of your module 1. Demonstrating the pre- screen questions and set up, all the screens you have learned and your analysis of the information collected and then exercise prescription specific to the screening results.

Finding case studies can be a challenge but so long as you have a minimum of 4 screens for 4 people this will be enough information for you to demonstrate and understanding of the programme. If this is stil a problem let me know and I will see if I can help.

You have 4 face to face mentoring CPD sessions over the year to do just that Bruna - check out the website for dates and call Kerri to get yourself booked on. 01158780466
