weak back!

Hi

I screened a new client the other day, who had a small leg length discrepancy, was positive on both SLR, different positive screenings for the pelvis on each side so 4 sign and TT on left and Gillets on the right, and QL tightness on both sides, and was positive on all the shoulder tests on the right. I then gave her the leg press exercise, the slump and the static hip flex exercise.  On retest her legs were the same length and the gillets test on the right had improved massively.

However the next day she emailed to say she had felt her back was weak and achy all day and had to sit more than usual.  Admittedly she had not done the exercises at all that day.  Would this weak/achy feeling be due to something that I have done?  Should I advise her to continue with the exercises, as her body is learning to work differently and see how it goes but stop if it becomes painful, or should I suggest she sees a physio?  Usually I dont hear from my clients this soon although I do ask them to let me know how its going.

Hi sandra

this is not unusual, as you say this is a period of adaption for their bodies as they learn with move without the biomechanical probelms (or at last reduced problems).  she should continue with the exercises as that will help her adapt quicker.  if the wekaness becomes painful, then yes she should stop.  no need to see a therapist just from her feeling weak, so give it some more time.

i would however replace the slump exercise with anoither suitable exercise that she needs from her assessment.  sometimes if the client is over jealous in slumping it can respond by this 'wekaness' feeling, so drop that one (and replace it if appropriate but you dont have to) and see how she gets on.
